Devin was a senior at DuSable high school when he came across his high school sweetheart, Layla. They were inseparable. They planned a potential future together because they knew they would be together forever. Devin was always judged to be a “player“ because of his attractive features: caramel, smooth skin, tall, with hazel brown eyes, and a nice smile to top everything else off. The only thing that caught people offguard was that he didn’t talk much. Layla on the other hand, was a smart, very outgoing girl. She was apart of several different clubs; Cheerleading, track, dance, and National Honor Society, she did it all. Everybody loved her and always wanted to be around her. Layla attempted once before to break Devin out of his shell, but he just wasn’t cooperating, so she let it go. He seemed to enjoy being to himself. Layla barely was able to understand why she was still around all this time. He became even a mystery for Layla to solve. It was Layla and Devin’s senior year together, and things begin to change quickly.
It was senior year when Layla decided it was time for something new, so she decided to run for 2011 Prom Queen.
“Devin, you should try to do something new this year. It’s our last year!” Says Layla.
”I’ll leave all that stuff up to you girl.”
”I just don’t understand you sometimes, Devin. You’ve been the same way since freshman year. Surprise our senior class!”
”I’m tired of you always telling me what you think i should do. Just because everybody likes you, it’s easier for you to join all these different clubs. Youre always down my back about the same stuff man!”
Layla was shocked. She looked at him in total disbelief because it was the loudest he‘d ever been with her. She picked up a sense of jealously because she had friends, and all he had was her.
”Okay, now you’re doing too much Devin. Get it together.”
Layla walks off and Devin begins to think where did all the aggression come from; he didn’t even know. Devin figured he was stressing too much because of his insecurities. Deep inside, he did believe that Layla was better than him, and that she would eventually leave him.
Later on, Layla was talking to her best friend, Desiree’. Desiree’ always thought it was something up with Devin considering how cute he was and he had a wonderful girlfriend. Layla knew it was a bad idea to talk to Desiree’ about Devin Yelling at her because she knew how Desiree’ felt about him. Layla was ready for the “i told you so” comments.
”Girl, i don’t know what had gotten into Devin lately.”
”What happened?”
”like always, and every year, i was trying to encourage him to try something new, like me, and he just snapped out. Like telling me to stop trying to get him to be involved in things like me. I didn’t understand why It made him THAT MAD though.”
”Umm, sounds like somebody is insecure.”
”but how?” says Layla as she tries to make Sense of Devin’s attitude.
”He probably thinks that you’re better than him. Either way, him yelling At you about something like THAT, is a female move. He has to chill. This conversation is nothing new. You tell him to get involved every year!”
”I don’t know what’s up. Maybe he needs some sex!”
Both girls laugh hysterically on the phone as Layla tries to shed some light on her situation.
“GIRL! you are crazy! Yeah that might be it too! Don’t deprive him girl.”
”Ha! Right. I’ll figure it out, hopefully. I’ll call you when i make it home.”
”alright girl, see you.“
Layla and Desiree‘ went thejr separate ways home. While walking, Layla comes acrosss Devin and seeing that he was engaging in a conversation with another young guy. she was happy to see he was making friends, finally. She included herself in the conversation With Devin and his new friend.
”Hey babe, who’s your new friend are you going to introduce us?”
Layla was anxious to meet the new friend that finally got her boyfriend to hold a conversation.
”uhh yea, Rob this is my girl, Layla. Layla, this is Rob”, says Devin slightly annoyed that she totally bombarded the whole vibe.
Rob shook Layla’s hand. He was quite the gentleman, she thought. She decided to stick around for the conversation.
“So Rob, what school do you go to?” said Layla curiously.
With an instant and confident response Rob says , “I’m in college. I attend Georgia State University.”
”Ohh you’re a college boy! Are you down here for the summer?”
”Yeah, I’m down here visiting some friends and family for a while.”
”Okay sounds good. Do you like it down there?”
”Yeah it’s cool. Weather is great. I hear Devin is supposed to be attending school in Georgia as well?”
“Yeah? Unless he’s made that decision already without me.” says Layla, while also giving Devin the most unpleasant Face.
Devin abruptly ended the conversation before Layla could finish the Interrogation. Devin told Rob that he would catch up with him later, and the group went their separate ways.
